The family was associated with the Craven area from the early 14th century. By the 19th century the Lister estate included large tracts of land in Craven and adjacent Lancashire. It was the 1st Baron Lister’s ambition that he might be able to ride from Pendle Hill to Malham Tarn (where he had a shooting box) on his own land
